- He operated a grocery store in Pine Haven next to a store operated by Henry J. Gingles. When the Gingles store was destroyed by fire, John's store also burned. Having no insurance, he was unable to rebuild. Henry Gingles however, was well insured and relocated his business to Benton where it prospered and is still in operation.
He was a painter, carpenter, and paper hanger.
He bought 25.4 acres near Timber Lake west of Bauxite in 1948, and placed rental properties there.
He suffered from diabetes eventually dying of heart failure. He is buried in Liberty Cemetery.
